The XR-88B “Broadhead” is an extended-range hypervelocity craft designed to travel long distances at high speed, to penetrate deep behind enemy lines and gather intelligence, or execute surgical strikes against point targets.

Its slim profile helps to reduce its detection signature, but even if spotted, can easily outrun enemy interceptors. Its design focus on long range and high speed comes at the cost of maneuverability, and the need for reduced mass in order to sustain those speeds results in lighter armor and fewer defensive weapons.

Behind the Scenes

The Broadhead's role is inspired by hypersonic bombers and reconnaissance aircraft from the Cold War such as the B-1 Lancer, and the SR-71 Blackbird.

Design-wise, it's a cross between the Colonial Viper from Battlestar Galactica and the XL-15 from the 2022 Pixar film Lightyear.
