Tip of the Spear

Briefing

Captain Clayton Harroway

“A Vrukarin special forces detachment is preparing to launch a covert assault into enemy-occupied territory, but their approach vector is dotted with enemy early warning systems – each one paired to a surface-to-air missile battery. The strike team's helicopters are in no way fast or agile enough to brute force their way through, even if they could afford to lose the element of surprise, so it's up to you to pave the way for them.

Destroy those SAM sites, and don't forget you're on the clock. The strike team will already be en route by the time you arrive, so you need to take those SAMs down quickly so the helicopters can slip in behind you before the enemy has a chance to repair their early warning grid. Timing is critical, or it's going to be a bloodbath. Good luck, good hunting, get out there.”

Setup

This scenario follows the rules for Custom Setup on page 25, with the following changes:

Setup SAM Sites:

  • Take three Beacon tokens per player.
  • Starting with the second player and proceeding clockwise, each player places a token in the play area. Tokens must be at least Range 1 apart, and may not be within Range 1 of the edge of the play area.

Game Length: This scenario lasts a maximum of 10 rounds. Use the Round Tracker Wheel in the Downloads section to keep track.


Mission Parameters

Objective: Destroy the SAM Sites – Punch a hole through the enemy early warning network to allow the strike team through undetected.

  • If all SAM sites are destroyed at the end of Round 10, all players win.
  • If there are still active SAM sites at the end of Round 10, all players lose.
  • If all players are destroyed while SAM sites are still active, all players lose.

Reward: 15,000 cR (per player) plus any Kill credits scored.

  • Bonuses: 2,500 cR for each SAM site destroyed.

Destroyed Players: These players earn 50% fewer Reward credits, but receive full Kill credits.

Success

“Good job out there. While I'm not privy to the nature of the strike team's mission, it seems that a nearby Oruznyan ammunition depot coincidentally exploded a couple hours after your sortie, with artillery shells detonating like firecrackers well into the night. Quite the sight to behold, I'm told. In any case, it means the Oruznyans are going to have to be more judicious with who they decide to shell from now on, since ammo for their big guns will soon be in short supply.”

Increase Morale by 1.

Failure

“Do you have any idea how much time and money it costs to train a single special forces operator? And how much it costs to keep them fed, equipped and operational? Twelve of them were lost today in the span of ten minutes.”

Decrease Morale by 1.

Special Rules

SAM Site Defenses

  • Any player ship that gets within Range 2 of a Beacon token is automatically targeted and fired upon by missiles from the SAM site. SAM sites have a 360-degree firing arc and launch four Light Missiles at any ship that is within range.

Destroying SAM Sites

  • Players may attack any Beacon tokens that are within weapon’s range and firing arc, and which their ship does not overlap. Beacons have 3 Evasion. If at least one die is a hit, it is destroyed.
  • When a SAM site is destroyed, the player responsible collects the token and places it beside their ship's chassis. Each token can be redeemed for a bounty of 2,500 cR at the end of the mission.
